As a graduate student instructor at the University of Michigan, I taught several discussion sections for this survey course, which is offered each semester by the Department of Theatre & Drama for students of all majors. My discussion sections were taught in conjunction with weekly lectures and assignments given by Dr. E.J. Westlake or Dr. Bert Cardullo. My responsibilities included grading all papers and designing my own syllabus and course plan to supplement lectures. My syllabi are available on request. Email D. Ohlandt, Ph.D. at profohlandt(at)gmail.com.
Discussion section objectives:
- To further explore the theatrical and dramatic concepts presented in lecture.
- To become familiar with some of the “constituent arts” of theatre (acting, directing, design, playwriting, architecture) through classroom experience and/or research.
- To examine the plays and concepts assigned in lecture from a production-oriented perspective. Often, if not always, a production-oriented perspective involves further exploration of analytical approaches.
- To experience theatre as a collaborative project, working with others of different interests, abilities, and expertise.
